Computer Addiction

Computer Addiction. The phase almost all of us go through at some point of time, when we suddenly, whether by friends or on our own, discover the magic of the internet and it’s treasures of role-playing games, reading material and other interesting tidbits. It’s something parents dread, as it consumes their children while they helplessly watch them descend into what at first appears to be a harmless addiction.

I myself have also gone through this, where I could spend hours on end playing an internet game with my friends from across Singapore and Malaysia. It seemed like a magic at first, meeting people an hour’s drive away from you and fighting alongside while working on quests and trading with other people. Then my mother complained that I was obsessed with the game and banned me from the computer. Thanks to her firm and strict rules, I soon lost my addiction to the computer and its games.

We have read other cases of people playing games for 36 hours straight, leading to exhaustion and eventual death. Thank God these incidents are not often, but the fact that there are even people like that is a bad thing. What has the world come to, that we spend all our time over the computer doing unedifying things, even sacrificing precious time given to us for worshiping God to be hooked onto a machine?
